70th Anniversary Celebrating the Crash of the “Roswell-WhatsIt”

Last week marked the 70th anniversaries of Kenneth Arnold’s famous sighting and the crash of a mysterious ‘whatsit’ outside Roswell, New Mexico. I traveled to Roswell and spent 5 days and nights enjoying the local hospitality and seeing UFO-related lectures across town at 4 different venues. I saw old friends and made new ones. I took lots of pictures and hope to share more of my adventures in the near future. Until then …

70th Anniversary of the Birth of the Modern UFO Era

Audio interview of Kenneth Arnold (YouTube)

This week marks the 70th anniversaries of the two most seminal events in the birthing of the modern UFO era’s major myths: Kenneth Arnold’s sighting of a shimmering squadron of delta shaped objects over Mount Rainier, Washington and the crash of a mysterious ‘whatsit’ outside Roswell, New Mexico with alleged alien bodies recovered by the military. Both events occurred in the Summer of 1947, with the Arnold sighting cited as kicking off the American Flying Saucer craze and the Roswell newsflash only coming to prominence with the publication of The Roswell Incident (by Charles Berlitz and William Moore) in 1980.

I grew up believing in the classic myth of Roswell representing crashed saucers and pickled aliens scooped up and covered up by the US government but have since come to lean heavily towards the research documented by Nick Redfern in his two books: Body Snatchers in the Desert in 2005 and its recent follow-up, The Roswell UFO Conspiracy (May 2017). Both books detail a probable American project melding nefarious human experimentation with advanced avionics / nuclear radiation research. A sort of Project Paperclip (American importation of German Nazi scientists) meets Unit-731 (the Japanese version of Germany’s Dr. Mengele horrors) combining Fugo-balloons, unwitting human subjects (both Japanese and American), and Nazi Horten-brother flying-wing technologies. It’s a lot to take-in and no one wants to believe it but given the facts that we already know regarding each area of research (not to mention the CIA’s MK-Ultra sub-projects) it becomes all too plausible. Well, Nick Redfern is among the illustrious list of speakers presenting at one of two different UFO conferences being held in Roswell this year.

“Challenges to ET” conference organizer Guy Malone.

Albuquerque Journal coverage of upcoming conferences.

Given the sad state of UFOlogy this year (see our previous issue and this issue’s news headlines) it will be interesting to see what new information is presented at the two conferences being held. I will be attending the “Challenges to ET” conference hosted by Guy Malone that features Nick Redfern, Jack Brewer, Greg Bishop, Michael Heiser, and Joseph Jordan. I’ll also likely catch a speech or two at the Roswell Incident conference that is presented by the Roswell Daily Record newspaper which is set to feature presentations from Richard Dolan, Linda Howe, Nick Pope, Chase Kloetzke, Chuck Zukowski, Debbie Ziegelmeyer, Race Hobbs, David Marler, Marc D’Antonio, Alejandro Rojas, Courtney Brown, and Josh Gates.

So, if you are going to be in Roswell from June 29th to July 2nd, drop me a line at SMiles@AnomalyArchives.org and maybe we can have some interesting conversations-over-saucers!

Meanwhile…

Stop UFOlogical Cultural Appropriation &
Exploitation of Ancient Human Remains!

Gaia TV Covers the “Mystery” (Facebook Video)

You have undoubtedly come across news items alleging the discovery of a new mysterious body from Peru being touted as a mummified, possibly alien, body. Blogger and researcher Curt Collins (Blue Blurry Lineswrites:

“The remains of the dead should not be used as props for UFO promoters and entertainers like Maussan and Gaia. We’ve had the Star Child, Greer’s Sirius “Atacama Humanoid,” and when challenged about the BeWitness Slides, Maussan offered a bounty for the child’s body itself.
Forensic Anthropologists should be in charge of this kind of thing. Once the science is done, if there’s anything valid, share it with the world.
Until then, let the dead rest in peace. Don’t support the exploitation.”

I couldn’t agree more with Mr. Collins on this issue. You’d think folks would have learned by now, especially after the Roswell “Alien” Slides debacle promoted by Jaime Maussan and others fell apart in May of 2015. Yet the human will to believe continues, with many UFOlks looking for the next Smoking-Gun / Holy-Grail to prove their beliefs in ExtraTerrestrial visitation. For a more probable, down-to-earth explanation, see this Peruvian website’s investigation of this and other likely “manipulated artifacts.” (Hat tip to Sharon Hill of Doubtful News)

Blur – Thought I Was A Spaceman
La Musicale 2015

[Verse 1]
Thought I was a spaceman
Digging out my heart
In some distant sand dunes
In a car park

Cause the desert had encroached upon
The places where we lived
People like me fight
To keep the demons in

But we never succeeded
We never succeeded
In fact we failed

[Verse 2]
Thought I was a spaceman
Digging out my heart
In some distant sand dune
In a car park

By the empty harbour
Where the junk boat phantoms float
The fight for happy valley
Sadly, the line broke

[Verse 3]
Thought I found my black box
Washed up on the shore
On outlying islands
Past the land fall

Thought I thought I’d found it
But that was not true at all
I’d walked into a bar
Raised hell

[Verse 4]
Cut the chasm out me
Always and always the same
Put the ghost in writing
And let it be (you again)

Thought I was a spaceman
Digging out my heart
In some distant sand dune
In Hyde Park

[Verse 5]
Thought I was a spaceman
Digging out my heart
In some distant sand dune
You again

Thought I was a spaceman
Digging out my heart
In some distant sand dune
You again

You again
You again

Book of the Week…

The Close Encounters Man
How One Man Made the World Believe in UFOs

by Mark O’Connell

‘The Close Encounters Man’ tells the unlikely story of how the government’s astrophysicist debunker became the phenomenon’s most expert defender.

“If you’re jonesing for an extraterrestrial, you should check out The Close Encounters Man by Mark O’Connell. O’Connell, a writer for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and founder of the UFO blog High Strangeness, set out to write “a UFO book people wouldn’t need to hide from other people.” He found his ideal subject in J. Allen Hynek, the astronomer hired by the United States Air Force in 1948 to debunk the reports of strange objects in the sky flooding in from across the country. Eventually Hynek broke with his handlers and became the first scientist to lend credence to the UFO phenomenon. The author of 1972’s The UFO Experience: A Scientific Study, he would go on to found the Center for UFO Studies in 1973, present a speech on flying saucers to the United Nations in 1978, and develop the “close encounter” scale that would inspire Steven Spielberg’s popular Close Encounters of the Third Kind (“a huge boon to his work,” O’Connell told me. “They shot a scene where the little aliens grab Hynek’s pipe from him and stick it up their noses, but it was cut down to a six-second cameo.”)

In telling the life story of Hynek, the “astro-beatnik,” O’Connell winds up with a stunning panorama of the UFO movement—from fringe conspiracy theorists to amateur astronomers to agnostic scientists—as well as its colossal impact on pop culture and modern science. I recently spoke with O’Connell over the phone about Hynek’s unique story of skeptic turned believer, the scientific study of the inexplicable, and what makes a good UFO witness.”

On the MUFON / John Ventre Scandal …

“Mark O’Connell, formerly an active MUFON investigator but also an open-minded critic of the organization has severed his ties with them over this series of incidents: UFO Fever.”

On Roswell & his debate with Don Schmitt …

Beating a Dead UFO – HighStrangenessUFO.com

“So, the other day I did a webcast with noted UFO authority and all-around nice guy Kevin Randle (you can listen to it here), in which we discussed the Roswell Debate I had recently with Don Schmitt. The debate, for those of you new to the story, took place at the Milwaukee Paranormal Conference earlier this fall. It was sponsored by well-known UFO and paranormal media outlet KGRA Radio, but after webcasting the debate live, KGRA has decided for reasons known only to them to reneg on their promise to post the debate on their website.”

Just Released… UFOs: Reframing the Debate – Edited by Robbie Graham

Not the book of the week as it’s already held that spot before and we hope it will act as a long-term catalyzer for deep thought on the subject, but…

The new anthology with contributions from myself and more than a dozen other UFO writers is now available to the public: Amazon-Smile Program.

[Buy books through Amazon’s SMILE Program and Support the Anomaly Archives]

Robbie and Greg just appeared on Coast to Coast AM with host George Knapp and had a long discussion about the state of UFO research in the context of the just released anthology. Greg and Robbie also discuss the book and the need for new thinking on UFOs on Greg’s wedradio show. You can listen to that book-talk show at Greg’s Radio Misterioso website (MP3 podcast archive).

Greg also recently interviewed UFOs: Reframing the Debate contributor, MJ Banias and did a panel discussion show about the new alien film, “Arrival” (with lots of spoilers) featuring Debate contributors, MJ BaniasJoshua CutchinRed Pill Junkie, and Ryan SpragueIs “Arrival” The Perfect Alien Movie?

Some other news-of-note includes…

DramaRama in the UFO-Scene: MUFON State Director, John Ventre, demoted after public and membership outcry over his racially charged social media rant. Following a wave of complaints to MUFON about his personal public behavior the organization’s Executive Director issued a public statement: MUFON reaction to recent social media postings.

The statement caused another wave of criticism starting, as one would expect, within the comments section of the public response posting. Several comments were deleted before ALL of the replies were deleted and the comments section was closed.

Among the noteworthy responses to this situation:

Nick Redfern announced his withdrawal from all things to do with MUFON.

“Some of you may have seen all the controversy surrounding MUFON this past week or thereabouts. As a result of all this outrageous crap, I have told MUFON that I will no longer be writing my monthly column for their magazine, and I have severed ties with them. Period.”  – Nick Redfern

James E Clarkson, MUFON Washington State Section Director issued his own public statement condemning Ventre’s rant and expressing solidarity with respect and non-discrimination.

North Carolina MUFON co-founder William Senter also expressed disapproval for the organization’s response to the situation and appears to be leaving the organization until a more appropriate response occurs.

Mark O’Connell, formerly an active MUFON investigator but also an open-minded critic of the organization has severed his ties with them over this series of incidents: UFO Fever.

Race Hobbs, Program Director of the KGRA Digital Broadcasting Station said, “after 10 years of service to the organization of MUFON, I have tendered my resignation… MUFON UFO Radio has been removed from the KGRA Roster.”

MUFON’s Director of Experiencer Research, Kathleen Marden, has expressed her position and is taking a stand against intolerance and contemplating her next move with regard to the organization. You can read her statements and the follow-up in Mike Clelland’s post: Public relations nightmare at MUFON with Statement from Kathleen Marden.

Mr. Ventre has been removed from several upcoming speaking engagements, had his community access television show cancelled, and been demoted from State Section Director to state treasurer and event coordinator. Ventre remains listed among MUFON’s “Inner Circle” for, “donating in excess of $5,000 in a single donation.”

 – MEANWHILE: “It is happening, again.”

25 years after America was exposed to the Twin Peaksian Universe…

David Lynch’s surreal Twin Peaks tv series is back with a vengeance, causing much discussion about this over-the-top oddball story that features Secret Societies, Mysterious Entities Feeding Off Humanity’s Pain & Sorrow, Drug Smuggling, Human Trafficking & Sexploitation, Strange Premonitions & Visions, Uncanny Owls, UFOs & Blue Book and the Precursor to the X-Files… FBI Regional Bureau Chief Gordon Cole’s “Blue Rose Cases.”

Back in 2007 and 2008 I wrote a couple of articles about these aspects as an entre for those interested in delving more deeply into the shadowy underbelly of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks / Fire Walk With Me surrealities:

“My Dream is a Code Waiting to Be Broken.
Break the Code, Solve the Crime.”

Contact John Hawkins for details.

It looks like John’s first meeting (April 29th) will focus on the topic of Cryptoterrestrials!

 – ANOMALY NEWS HEADLINES

Anomalists, Forteans, Guerilla-Ontologists, Intermediatists, Paranormalists, SynchroMystics & Twilight Language Theorists

The esoteric sub-genre called SynchroMysticism (coined by Jay Kotze in 2006) is still a relatively unknown arena related to attempts to interpret “Twilight Language.”

Twilight Language… “explores hidden meanings and synchromystic connections via onomatology (study of names) and toponymy (study of place names). This blog further investigates “name games” and “number coincidences” found in news and history.”).”

I’m honored to yet again be listed by Loren Coleman as being among the top Twilight Language Theorists. Among those listed within this year’s top 25 are deceased blogger and radical CyberPunk-Fortean & UFO-thinker, Mac Tonnies; author of The CryptoTerrestrials.

Greg Bishop’s Epic Adventures

I’ve known author and researcher Greg Bishop since the early to mid 1990s when we met through the alt media zine scene. We’ve featured his latest UFO book, It Defies Language, as Book-of-the-Week this time last year. Well he continues to amaze and inspire me with his dedication to anomalous subjects and this past month has been particularly noteworthy…

Greg recently hosted ParaMania 2017 (Flashback to 2016 Premier) in Los Angeles, giving guests a tour of some of SoCal’s weirdest sights and experiences. The final night Greg and guests did a special informal freewheeling “after-party” round-table discussion live on his Radio Misterioso show. The relaxed and intriguing conversations were made even more interesting by one of ParaMania’s founding members “calling-in” from 30,000 feet! This ParaMania attendee was flying home that night but managed to use the airline’s inflight wifi to stream the show AND skype-call live into the program! You can listen to that epic show at Greg’s Radio Misterioso website (MP3 podcast archive).

Greg also recently interviewed UFOs: Reframing the Debate contributor, MJ Banias. You should also check out Banias’ recent articles on his TerraObscura website on UFOs, Power Systems, and Modern Capitalism, plus Banias’ after interview article, “Involuntary Shapeshifters: The Collective Unconscious and Engaging A Non-Human Intelligence” where he reflects on that recent conversation with Greg Bishop on Radio Misterioso (MP3).

Another milestone from Greg’s audio archives relates to a special global holiday celebrated this past weekend … the Original Earth Day was MC’d by someone who would later be convicted of a grisly murder; Ira Einhorn. Radio Misterioso host Greg Bishop conducted the last public interview (June 24th, 2001) with Einhorn before his extradition from France to Philadelphia for the retrial of his conviction for the 1977 murder of Holly Maddux.

Media Explodes with Coverage of Alex Jones’ Child Custody Case!

Keeping up with (the wildest sides) of the Joneses … Alex Jones and Tales of a Precognitive Visions, Bill Hicks Switch, Performance Persona, Stratfor Strategems and More!

For many years now I’ve watched the rise of alt-media celebrity and POTUS-45 confidante, Alex Jones, from his early days at ACTV (Austin Community Access TeleVision) and on KJFK (98.9FM) through the run up to Y2K and on to his meteoric rise to international celebrity post-911. Now Alex finds himself in a fight to retain custody of his three children (while he has another child on the way with his new wife) and the media are twisting the legal maneuvering of Alex’s lawyers attempts at separating his on-camera demeanor from his home-life personality by relating his InfoWars persona to that of a “Performance Artist,” with the media running with the misinformation that this is a declaration of his not actually believing what he publicly says on his shows and documentaries. While the mainstream media focus on this idea they are predicting he’ll lose masses of listeners / followers, but anyone who has watched him for any length of time knows he has always indulged in sketch-comedy and satire to convey his ideas; see this recent YouTube video collection of some of his most outrageous satirical comedy skits … if you can stand to watch him.  😉

The book is called UFOs: Reframing the Debate and features a diverse array of independent thinkers on all things ufological. The brainchild of editor Robbie Graham (Silver Screen Saucers: Sorting Fact from Fantasy in Hollywood’s UFO Movies), it arose out of the disillusionment he’s felt with popular approaches to the phenomenon (YouTube link). I’m very excited to see this book released as I am optimistic that it might actually help move UFO research forward.

UFOs: Reframing the Debate
Edited by Robbie Graham

IF YOU LIKE YOUR UFO LITERATURE TO CONFIRM WHAT YOU ALREADY ‘KNOW,’ THIS IS NOT THE BOOK FOR YOU!

The UFO field has produced thousands of dedicated researchers over the years, and reams of literature; but to what end? What can we claim to know conclusively today about the underlying nature of UFO phenomena that we didn’t know in the late-1940s? UFO study has always suffered from major organizational and methodological problems. It has also become dangerously self-referential.

If ever we are to further our understanding of the UFO enigma, we must fundamentally reframe our debate. We must wipe the board clean and fill it with new ideas, new theories, even new language. We must be willing to start from scratch when the field stagnates. We must be critical, sober, and free of dogma—ready to rinse away the residue of our own beliefs.

UFOs: Reframing the Debate is a collection of original essays exploring alternative perspectives on UFOs and how we might more usefully study the phenomenon in the 21st Century. The book brings together some of the most progressive and iconoclastic thinkers in the field for an incisive deconstruction of current popular ideas. Critical but constructive, this challenging volume represents a range of differing (even conflicting) alternative viewpoints on UFOs and related phenomena.

UFOs: Reframing the Debate is a cold, hard, slap in the face for ‘UFOlogy,’ a call to break away from established ideas, approaches, and practices, and to boldly tread a new path in quest of understanding what may very well be the greatest mystery of all.

Book of the Week…

The Children of Mu
By James Churchward

Mu, as a lost Pacific Ocean continent, was later popularised by James Churchward (1851–1936) in a series of books, beginning with Lost Continent of Mu, the Motherland of Man (1926),[2] re-edited later as The Lost Continent Mu (1931).[8] Other popular books in the series are The Children of Mu (1931), and The Sacred Symbols of Mu (1933).

Churchward claimed that “more than fifty years ago,” while he was a soldier in India, he befriended a high-ranking temple priest who showed him a set of ancient “sunburnt” clay tablets, supposedly in a long lost “Naga-Maya language” which only two other people in India could read. Having mastered the language himself, Churchward found out that they originated from “the place where [man] first appeared—Mu.” The 1931 edition states that “all matter of science in this work are based on translations of two sets of ancient tablets:” the clay tables he read in India, and a collection of 2,500 stone tablets that had been uncovered by William Niven in Mexico.[8]:7

Churchward gave a vivid description of Mu as the home of an advanced civilization, the Naacal, which flourished between 50,000 and 12,000 years ago, was dominated by a “white race,”[8]:48 and was “superior in many respects to our own”[8]:17 At the time of its demise, about 12,000 years ago, Mu had 64,000,000 inhabitants and many large cities, and colonies on the other continents.

Churchward claimed that the landmass of Mu was located in the Pacific Ocean, and stretched east–west from the Marianas to Easter Island, and north–south from Hawaii to Mangaia. He claimed that according to the creation myth he read in the Indian tablets, Mu had been lifted above sea level by the expansion of underground volcanic gases. Eventually Mu “was completely obliterated in almost a single night”:[8]:44 after a series of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, “the broken land fell into that great abyss of fire” and was covered by “fifty millions of square miles of water.”[8]:50

Churchward claimed that Mu was the common origin of the great civilizations of Egypt, Greece, Central America, India, Burma and others, including Easter Island, and was in particular the source of ancient megalithic architecture. As evidence for his claims, he pointed to symbols from throughout the world, in which he saw common themes of birds, the relation of the Earth and the sky, and especially the Sun. Churchward claims that the king of Mu was named Ra and he relates this to the Egyptian god of the sun, Ra, and the Rapanui word for Sun, ra’a, which he incorrectly spells “raa.”[8]:48 He claimed to have found symbols of the Sun in “Egypt, Babylonia, Peru and all ancient lands and countries – it was a universal symbol.”[8]:138

Churchward attributed all megalithic art in Polynesia to the people of Mu. He claimed that symbols of the sun are found “depicted on stones of Polynesian ruins,” such as the stone hats (pukao) on top of the giant moai statues of Easter Island. Citing W.J. Johnson, Churchward describes the cylindrical hats as “spheres” that “seem to show red in the distance”, and asserts that they “represent the Sun as Ra.”[8]:138 He also incorrectly claimed that some of them are made of “red sandstone”[8]:89 which does not exist on the island. The platforms on which the statues rest (ahu) are described by Churchward as being “platform-like accumulations of cut and dressed stone,” which were supposedly left in their current positions “awaiting shipment to some other part of the continent for the building of temples and palaces.”[8]:89 He also cites the pillars “erected by the Māori of New Zealand” as an example of this lost civilization’s handiwork.[8]:158 In Churchward’s view, the present-day Polynesians are not descendants of the dominant members of the lost civilization of Mu, responsible for these great works, but are instead descendants of survivors of the cataclysm that adopted “the first cannibalism and savagery” in the world.[8]:54

Book of the Week…
Communion
A True Story
By Whitley Strieber

communion-signed-strieber-weaver_3764

“The cover painting of an alien was rendered by Ted Seth Jacobs. The painting is considered one of the most widely recognized popular culture images of alleged “grey” aliens. “The Communion cover,” Jacobs recounts,

communion-signed-strieber-weaver_3766“was painted in my small apartment on East 83rd St, in New York City. Whitley sat with me first for a drawing of the Alien. As I sketched, he would indicate how to change the portrait so that it would more match what he saw. It was, I believe, the process used by police sketch artists. Every last detail was corrected according to his instructions. At one point, he said the image corresponded exactly to what he had seen. With Whitley beside me for the subsequent session, I began to paint the image on a wooden prepared panel, going through the same process as for the drawing, until Whitley finally said the image was exact. … As to the gender of the Alien image, to tell the truth, the subject didn’t come up. I don’t even know if the ‘greys’ have gender as we understand it. Whitley corrected the developing image to have a certain fragility, a vulnerability. I suppose we Earthlings usually associate these qualities with femininity.”[2]

Paul Smith on Remote Viewing and UFOs

“Using one mystery to try to explain another: That’s what seems to be happening in the perpetual interplay between remote viewing (RV) and unidentified aerial phenomena–popularly known as UFOs–space aliens, and everything connected to them in the popular culture. This confluence of RV and UFOs goes back almost to the beginning of remote viewing itself, and not just the notorious, but some of the most prominent and respected members of the remote viewing community have indulged. Impossible to fully capture in one evening discussion, I nonetheless introduce you to the general outlines of the controversy, sketch for you the interrelationships of some of the main figures and their claims, show you some of the more provocative and interesting results, and explain the advantages and shortfalls of employing remote viewing to ferret out the truth of extraterrestrial visitation.”

Book of the Week…
Reading The Enemy’s Mind:
Inside Star Gate – America’s Psychic Espionage Program
By Paul H. Smith

“From behind the cloak of U.S. military secrecy comes the story of Star Gate, the project that for nearly a quarter of a century trained soldiers and civilian spies in extra-sensory perception (ESP). Their objective: To search out the secrets of America ‘s cold war enemies using a skill called “remote viewing.” Paul H. Smith, a U.S. Army Major, was one of these viewers. Assigned to the remote viewing unit in 1983 at a pivotal time in its history, Smith served for the rest of the decade, witnessing and taking part in many of the seminal national-security crises of the twentieth century.

With the Star Gate secrets declassified and the program mothballed by the Central Intelligence Agency, the story can now be told of the ordinary soldiers drafted onto the battlefield of human consciousness. Using hundreds of interviews with the key players in the Star Gate program, and gathering thousands of pages of documents, Smith opens the records on this remarkable chapter in American military, scientific, and cultural history. He reveals many secrets about how remote viewing works and how it was used against enemy targets. Among these stories are the search for hostages in Lebanon; spying on Soviet directed energy weapons; investigating the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland; tracking foreign testing of weapons of mass destruction; combating narco-trafficking off America’s coasts; aiding in the Iranian hostage situation; finding KGB moles in the CIA; pursuing Middle East terrorists; and more.

Between the lines in the official records are revelations about unrelenting attempts from within and without to destroy the remote viewing program, and the efforts that kept Star Gate going for more than two decades in spite of its enemies. This is a story for the believer and the skeptic—a rare look at the innards of a top secret program and an eye-opening treatise on the power of the human mind to transcend the limitations of space and time.”
