From School Library Journal
YA Strieber has a reputation for writing well-researched nonfiction. Were it not for this reputation, readers would be more tempted to dismiss as fantasy this account of visits he has received from a non-human group. In the winter of 198586, the visits became both more frequent and more visible. Strieber sought the help of a counselor/hypnotist, who did not accept the alien hypothesis. Eventually Strieber's wife was also hypnotized. The accounts both Striebers gave under hypnosis and the memories that surfaced after hynosis, as well as several witnesses to aspects of the visitations all corroborate that something abnormal occurred. Strieber is careful not to jump to any conclusions; in fact, he philosophizes at length about the possibilities which include aliens, an as yet unidentified aspect of the human mind, or some generally invisible earth inhabitant such as fairies. The book is fascinating as long as it sticks to the basic account, and the ways in which the Striebers chose to research the phenomena. The passages of hypothesizing are more longwinded and will be of less interest to young adults, but they do remind readers that the Striebers have not accepted a single answer to the puzzle even now. Any readers who have interest in the unexplained will appreciate this book. Dorcas Hand, Episcopal High School, Bellaire

| Confrontations: A Scientist's Search for Alien Contact Author: Vallee, Jack Vallee, Jacques F. ISBN: 0-345-36501-1 LCCN: Dewey: Number: |
Paperback Ballantine Books
From Publishers Weekly
Vallee, a California astrophysicist, here analyzes UFO sightings that he has investigated personally and concludes that UFOs are real, but that, far from being the emissaries of extraterrestrial civilizations, they represent "a yet unrecognized level of consciousness, independent of man but closely linked to the earth." He argues that we will understand the UFO phenomenon only when we expand our view of the physical universe beyond four dimensions, and he urges scientists to take a greater interest in the subject because certain sightings that he has researched, particularly in Brazil, show that UFOs offer both a complex technology (probably microwave) and a hostile potential. Vallee's ( Dimensions ) theories will doubtless upset conventional ufologists, while nonbelievers will preserve their skepticism.

Vallee's Anatomy of a Phenomenon ( LJ 6/1/65) helped provide scientific respectability to the study of UFOs. While Vallee stresses the need to maintain scientific objectivity and a critical attitude, he is not afraid to offer theories which go beyond traditional extraterrestrial hypotheses. Book Description
Throughout the modern UFO era, thousands of honest scientists and informed laymen have seen through the official denials, the suppressions, and the whitewash -- and realized that, indeed, we are not alone. To them, author Jacques Vallee, the world's most renowned UFO expert, presents a tantalizing question. What if -- just if -- these alien visitors are Not from other planets? What if they have always been among us?
What if we can finally prove the case to which so much evidence points: That they have lived on earth for centuries, perhaps, from the beginning of time. That they may inhabit another dimension, a dimension so startlingly different from our own that our consciousness lurches to experience it religiously.
At once exhilarating and persuasive, Vallee's brilliant insights include a metaphysical odyssey through some of the most mystifying incidents in religious and mythological lore.
The miraculous visions of the Lady of Fatima in 1917.
The "cloudships" said to have visited medieval France.
The ancient Tzeltal Indians of Mexico kidnapped by flying half humans.
With his unparalleled knowledge of thousands of close encounters. Vallee -- the UFO authority celebrated in Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind -- constructs an eye-opening, yet ultimately irresistible theory: one that reveals the shocking reality of the ever-present, ever-powerful interdimensional aliens of Earth... and humanity's persistent inability to understand them. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

You know the government's opinion of UFOs: They're all fakes, mistakes, or swamp gas. But imagine what it might be like if the government took ETs seriously. What would they do if aliens contacted you? Maybe they'd hide you - keep you quarantined under armed guard - to keep you from telling the truth,
There is a law on the books right now which gives the government the right to do exactly that! Does that sound like the government doesn't take ETs seriously?
Can you handle the truth? If you're ready for the book that blows the lid off this UFO cover-up and breaks open a "Cosmic Watergate," you must read Extra-Terrestrials Among Us by George C. Andrews.

In Extra-Terrestrials Among Us you will discover documented case histories of:
Cattle mutilationsImpossible lights in the skyCircular flying machinesStrange disappearancesWeird objects falling from the skySpontaneous human combustion
The result will lead you to the only conclusion possible, we are not alone!
But Extra-Terrestrials Among Us goes even deeper. It reveals why ETs are here and what they are trying to accomplish. Is contact with them beneficial or harmful? You'll find out when you read Extra-Terrestrials Among Us.
The UFO phenomenon is not new. It is traced to ancient times and moves right up through Nazi contacts, UFO involvement, Martian landings, and more. For one of the most amazing books you have ever read, you must get Extra-Terrestrials Among Us.

From Publishers Weekly
Hired by a group of UFO enthusiasts, Intercep, a Phoenix industrial counter-espionage firm, conducted a three-year investigation into Swiss farmer Eduard Meier's claim that he had experienced 130 encounters with extraterrestrials from the Pleiades, beginning in 1975. Kinder (Victim: The Other Side of Murder, who conducted some 120 interviews in his own follow-up investigation and spent 13 weeks in Switzerland with Meier, notes, "No case had ever offered so much evidence"daylight color photos and 8mm film of the Pleiadean "beamships," sound recordings, landing tracks and metal samples.IBM research chemist Marcel Vogel, who examined a metal sample on a scanning electron microscope, comments here, "With any technology that I know of, we could not achieve this on this planet." No scientist or lab researching the claim has discredited Meier, and no one can explain how a poor, one-armed farmer with a sixth-grade education could have fabricated such evidence. Kinder documents the reactions of various scientists and summarizes key events in the UFO controversy since 1947. He writes in a dispassionate manner that adds to the fascination of this unusual story wherein the incredible takes on credibility. This book examines the claims of Swiss UFO contactee Eduard Meier. The evidence offered to substantiate his story includes strikingly clear photographs, 8mm films, sound recordings, and metal samples. While these things alone do not constitute proof, they do provide science with something to study. Meier's account of his childhood contacts parallels accounts in Budd Hopkins's Intruders ( LJ 6/1/87). This objective study of one man's part in the UFO mystery is fascinating, but the veracity of... read more

Here is the documented study of 19 people who were not and still are not UFO "believers"--but who all share a tiny unexplainable scar on their bodies, who share a gap of "missing time" and who under hypnosis remember the same utterly terrifying alien faces. Reissue.
Book Description
The arrival of extraterrestrial visitors is one of the most momentous events of our time. In Intruders Budd Hopkins explored the shocking truth about the contact between earthling and alien: that human beings are temporarily abducted and taken aboard UFOs. But Hopkins could not have told the stories of those victims without first having discovered the one experience common to all who report alien encounters -- the phenomenon known as "missing time."
Missing time tells how the people who have experienced abductions retained no memory of them -- all traces of the trauma were effectively erased from their memory. Yet, under hypnosis, many abductees were able to recall in vivid, convincing detail, the harrowing experiments that left mysterious scars on their bodies, the eerie interiors of UFOs where they were held captive, and the astonishing faces of their alien hosts.
The stories of seven victims of these otherworldly intruders are told her -- in detail at once dispassionate and dramatic, fully supported by scientific documentation. They are stories that could belong to anyone: your neighbors, your loved ones, even you.

New Year's Eve 1982 marked the beginning of one of the most puzzling UFO cases in recent times: the Hudson Valley "siege." The siege begot over 7,000 sightings of a boomerang-shaped craft or crafts moving silently through the sky over New York and Connecticut between 1982 and 1995. Night Siege is the collaborative effort of Hynek, Imbrogno, and Pratt to report the data gathered from witnesses of this mystifying experience, without speculation of what it might be. If you missed the first edition of Night Siege, this is your chance to delve into the Hudson Valley mystery. If you have read the first edition, you may be interested in the additional data covering sightings from 1986 to 1995, the graphical analysis of the UFO's appearance, and the chronology of the sightings. Aside from the purely factual value of the catalog of reports in Night Siege, its coverage of an undeniable series of events that somehow went largely untouched by the local authorities and the national media invites speculation into the origins of these silent objects. --Brian Patterson --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

From Publishers Weekly
In his popular UFO books, Communion and Transformation , Whitley Strieber noted his uncertainty whether the "visitors" who allegedly abducted him were extraterrestrials, fairies or something else. Conroy, a freelance journalist, argues that we should take seriously Strieber's claim that alien entities are catalysts to a higher consciousness. In this rambling, overwritten yet interesting study, he pokes around in Strieber's childhood to establish credibility, analyzes his horror fiction and assesses Strieber's UFO experiences in terms of the Jungian unconscious, fairy lore and other abduction cases in which symbolic imagery figured prominently. He also examines the mixed reception accorded to Communion both by the mainstream media and within the UFO community. In an epilogue, Conroy relates his own "visitorlike" experiences. Readers who lean toward a nuts-and-bolts explanation of UFOs as extraterrestrial craft will probably feel let down. Photos.

From Kirkus Reviews
Next time you glance at your watch and find a few minutes missing, better rush to your local hypnotist--you, too, might have been unwittingly kidnapped by a UFO. So Jacobs seems to suggest, estimating that over a million Americans have been abducted in recent years. ``We have been invaded,'' he proclaims, warning that ``the aliens have powers and technology greatly in advance of ours.'' Odd words, coming from a professor of history at Temple Univ., and a sign of the extreme oddity of the phenomenon, which Jacobs explores through extensive structural analysis. Each stage of a typical abduction, including the most sensational--the sexual encounters and reproductive experiments found in nearly all cases--are scrutinized through firsthand transcripts of hypnotic-regression interviews with more than 60 victims. The conclusion? That aliens are impregnating earth women in order to create quasi-human ``hybrids'' for some unknown purpose. The mind reels, but the sober, obviously terrified abductees make a strong case for the veracity of their experience. Jacobs's own presentation is a mixed blessing: His scholarship is punctilious, but he reveals the zeal of the converted in his debunking, after slight analysis, of all earth-bound explanations for UFO abductions (hysterical contagion, psychogenic fugue states, temporal-lobe dysfunction, and the like). By bringing solid scholarship to the pioneering efforts of Bud Hopkins and the hot prose of Whitley Strieber, this marks the next stage in UFO abduction research--and is just as likely to fly off the supermarket bookracks. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. Crystall, who has taken nearly 1,000 photographs of strange lights and objects (as well as a few aliens), has spent the past 11 years scanning the nighttime sky around Pine Bush, New York, an area of intense UFO... read more --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal
This is Fowler's third, and perhaps strangest, book about Betty Andreasson (now Mrs. Robert Luca). There is a little bit of everything here--out-of-body/near-death experiences, Christian spirituality, and ancient astronauts. By way of hypnotic regression, Luca was able to provide details about her numerous abductions, and her drawings, included in this book, clarify her verbal descriptions of alien machinery and enigmatic activities. The "secret design" behind alien abductions, says Luca, is a long-term genetics program undertaken by the aliens to prolong and improve life on the Earth. Fowler's objectivity in reporting these amazing experiences is called into question with his recent "discovery" of his own, up to now repressed, abduction experiences. Still, this book will be popular at public libraries with strong patron interest in UFO abduction.

From Publishers Weekly
The plot of this tale of satanic possession is an unholy mix of the moronic and the divine. Strieber ( Communion ; Wolfen ) endows his demon with a chilling omnipotence, the personality of the Joker from Batman and a fondness for the flammable. His humans pale by comparison. Old Father John Rafferty finds the gasoline-soaked body of parishioner Maria Julien in the sacristy of his Greenwich Village church. The police think that Father John and Maria were very close but John knows that his young curate, Frank Bayley, had succumbed more fully to Maria's sexual powers. Kitty Pearson, a lapsed Catholic NYPD lieutenant, suspects Father John of sex and cover-up violence until more bodies turn up toasted. She and the pastor barely escape immolation when they come too close to the truth. John is pressured to hand over his church to Father Frank but ends up confronting the menace in the nave by himself. Weak and whining priests, unsympathetic victims and often idiotic dialogue give the demon the best role by default and lead to a roaring but confusing and dissatisfying resolution. $100,000 ad/promo; Literary Guild selection; author tour.

From Kirkus Reviews
Of all the predators that have stalked Strieber's bestselling horror (Billy, Communion, etc.), none match for sheer exuberant evil the dark star of this resonant novel--a rip-roaring, fire- snorting demon infesting the soul of a Greenwich Village priest. But which priest harbors the demon? Kindly old John Rafferty, beloved pastor of Mary and Joseph church? His young assistant, Frank Bayley? Or ancient Tom Zimmer, mute for five years? A routine question, that, to drive the fast-moving plot, but... read more
